Deirdre Wallace Bringing her all-natural style to the hotel world
When envisioning the concept for her new hotel, , in Santa Monica, California, 31 year-old Deirdre Wallace knew she had the opportunity to bring something yet unseen in the now-saturated boutique hotel market. Having been raised in a family that owned and operated a national chain of hotels, she had the beginning tools to blueprint her dream.
Wallace realized her dream this past May with the debut of , a uniquely crafted hotel in the tradition of home. Her approach: provide refreshing affordability and luxurious amenities in a personal atmosphere that evokes calm, tranquility and a connection to nature. A "non-hotel," if you will.
Wallace conceived her hotel environment as one where guests felt an immediate sense of calm upon entering and where they can connect with the natural world around them. An Asian-inspired garden provides respite for meditation with Koi pond and Lucky Bamboo. Upon check-in, the hotel begins to feel even more like home with such public areas as the Living Room and the Fireplace Library. Hardwood floors and French-style doors are further touches that evoke warmth and welcome
Involved in every aspect of the hotel's development, Wallace wanted to steer away from the sleek and edgy boutique hotel of the 80's and 90's. Instead of a bustling bar scene, The Ambrose offers sunset receptions with organic wines and Elixir Tonics and Teas. Yoga, Pilates and personal fitness instruction are available and highlight the hotel's focus on health, wellness and an overall positive state of mind. An extensive fitness video library is also offered. Natural products on tap include Aveda, Pacifica, Odwalla Juices and Elixir Tonics and Teas plus organic coffee and teas. For today's "road warriors," this atmosphere is a refreshing change.
The hotel's form and function is general reflection of Wallace's overall lifestyle and values. An avid photographer and writer of poetry, she enjoys observing the connection between humanity and nature. She is a devotee of preservation and restoration, and has been passionately involved with the Save Venice efforts. She appreciates interesting architecture and the relationship between people and their physical surroundings. One of her favorite hobbies is photographing people in "blissful moments," in a compelling architectural space. Wallace hopes that her guests will find their own bliss in the Ambrose's natural environment.
Wallace will continue to realize her vision of "non-hotels" with a handful of properties already in development. She does not envision these as a brand, but more like a state of mind. Each hotel will elicit a similar ambiance: one of nature, tranquility, bliss and a connection to the building that surrounds these elements.
