It can be nice to go on vacation without an agenda–no 2 o’clock tour, no museum lines, no hustle to the next activity. Every once in awhile, we love having a day free to drink mimosas until noon, and read a book on the beach. Here are some great independent bookstores to stop by to help set you up for a day of rest and relaxation.

BookMonster looks, and feels a little bit more like a library than your everyday bookstore. With rows of neatly organized new and used books, large tables for reading, and computers to help you find what you’re looking for, it’s a great spot to stop before you head to the beach for a little reading and relaxing. BookMonster: 212 Santa Monica Blvd.; 424-238-8576

Diesel, A Bookstore

Diesel, A Bookstore is a great little independent shop in Brentwood, offering a wide variety of titles, and excellent author events. After browsing the aisles and picking out your next read, we’d recommend heading around the corner to Caffe Luxxe for a latte and a croissant. Diesel, A Bookstore: 225 26th St. #33; 310-576-9960

Angel City Books & Records

Despite being a bit small and narrow, Angel City Books & Records manages to feel more welcoming and open than cramped. It’s a great spot to pick up an old classic, or to find a new home for that copy of The Grapes of Wrath that you’ve read five times. Angel City Books & Records: 218 Pier Ave.; 310-399-8767

Thunderbolt Spiritual Books

This eclectic little bookstore on Santa Monica Boulevard features a giant stone buddha in the middle of the shop, as well as an adorable shop dog. If you’re into meditation or yoga, we’d recommend stopping by to check out the books, as well as the selection of handbells, tingshas, and gemstone malas.
