Known for its palm-tree studded boulevards, mountain views, and picturesque, ocean sunsets, Santa Monica harbors quite a bit of the beauty of the natural world. Surprisingly enough, it’s also a destination for man-made works of art. Whether you’re looking for Warhol and Chagall, or you’re more interested in modern, local artists, the city has a gallery for you. Here are the some of the best Santa Monica art galleries.
Bergamot Station Arts Center
Built in 1875 to store cars for California’s steam-powered railroad system, Bergamot Station would eventually blossom into an art junkie’s dream. After sitting vacant for most of the 80s, it reopened as an arts center in 1994 and ultimately blossomed into a destination for art junkies all over the world, with dozens of Santa Monica art galleries inside. If you’re in town in on July 22nd, be sure to check out their Summer Celebration—it’ll feature live music, performance art, and artist talks. T. Heritage Art Gallery and Frame Shop
Local artist, Tim Heritage, owns and operates this small, intimate gallery and frame shop just off of Highway 10, on Los Angeles’s Westside. Praised for his attention to his clients’ needs, and the colorful prints he offers of his own work, Tim’s shop is a Santa Monica must see. Drive down Pico Boulevard and you won’t miss it—a giant, metal cat sign sits atop the eclectic-looking shop’s roof. T. Andrew Weiss Gallery
Specializing in the modern works of Picasso, Chagall, Miro and Dali, Santa Monica’s Andrew Weiss Gallery hosts regular auctions and rotating, specialty exhibits. It’s also home to a stunning collection of old Hollywood photography, with the largest archive of Marilyn Monroe original photos in the world. Andrew Weiss Gallery: 2525 Michigan Ave.; 310-246-9333. Just a few blocks away from Bergamot Station, Santa Monica’s Revolver Gallery predominantly features the works of famed pop artist and abstract expressionist Andy Warhol. Warhol enthusiasts will delight in a completely immersive experience of over 200 of his original paintings and prints. The gallery feels like an homage to both Warhol’s works, and his life, as it even houses his personal Rolls-Royce. If you think you’re in the market for a new piece, be sure to make a reservation at this popular, destination gallery.
